Reviewing Restaurants

Share

(Toledo, OH) I am going to embark on a culinary and rhetorical journey into the world of restaurant reviews. I am looking for feedback as to whether I should create a separate blog or whether to include said reviews in my already-schizophrenic collection at this site.

What do you think? Would a weekly restaurant review clog up this site, add to it, or provide a change of pace? Would you out-of-town readers be turned off by posts about mostly Midwestern eateries?

My reasoning is simple: I like to eat, I like to write, and I am uniquely qualified, as I spent 25 years working in the restaurant business in every position between dishwasher and owner. I have worked in fast food, casual restaurants, and fine dining, and I know a good restaurant when I visit one.

Anyways, thanks in advance for any comments on this topic...

Are there good restaurants in Toledo? Wonders never cease...

And why have you developed a hard on for Billy Boy? Perhaps the hits genenated by the articles on him?

Merry CHRISTmas, btw.

Mike - I think a thread like this on a weekly basis would be refreshing! With all of the dissention, anxiety and politics in todays' news, the idea of idle chat about good (and not so good!) food would be welcome.

Having also worked in the restaurant business I like to think I am a little more observant than the average weekend diner. I pay attention not only to the quality of the food, but to the service staff, cleanliness, little things like the fill levels of condiments vs how busy a place is...I'm told I'm very picky. :)

I don't mind paying for a meal, regardless of price, as long as it's good. When the best you can say is 'edible' then chances are the place won't get a second chance.

Keep this one going. I think it will be interesting! Thanks!

Matt - there are LOTS of good restaurants in Toledo. In fact there are a couple that are excellent!

You really should try some of them! :)

And Merry CHRISTmas to you, as well!

Yes, Toledo has quite a few high-end restaurants that match the finest in New York or LA.

Merry Christmas to you, Matt. My posts on White follow a pattern: to respond to his idiocy regarding NSM and Toledo, or (like today's) when Mr. White engages in character defamation about people I know.

Do: thanks for the suggestions; we will have to compare restuarant war stories some time.

Oh, to answer Matt's other question:

Yes, I do get a bump in page hits when neo-Nazi topics are posted, but I do lose some of my mainstream readers when comments get ugly from people like Elmer.

Besides, I have no plans to commercialize this site, so the page hits are only empty statistics.

I'd start out here and if it becomes something you want to put more focus on then? You can always create a second blog.

Has anyone tried the new Mexican restaurant on Briarfield - Abuelo's?

I thoroughly enjoyed it. The food was hot, well seasoned, plentiful and reasonably priced. The service was excellent.

There were a couple small items on the cleanliness list - water on the floor in the lounge, sticky spot on the table, but overall it appeared clean.

My dinner was $14.95 and the portion I couldn't finish I brought home and ate for lunch for two more days.

If you go - make sure you try the Shrimp Chowder. It's incredible - rich, flavorful, and warms the tummy.

A weekly thread on restaurants would be nice, Mike. Sounds like you're an expert and I'd be able to take your advice.

Mike,

I believe that a restaurant review blog can and should stand on its' own if it is to develop its' own following.

Q. Will you be inviting guest reviews?

Q. Are you looking for an overall experience type of review, or will it be food only?

I'd love to read an independant review blog (or newspaper column) about Toledo (area) restaurants.

I'd also like to contribute in some small way if that were possible, with either reviews or collaboration on reviews.

I too have been told that I catch many details that others miss, and I can be a bit picky when necessary.

Needless to say, it's a great idea!

Awesome thoughts, Hooda:

1. I think guest reviews are a great idea, plus all I would have to do is edit and post the submissions.

2. Definitely the overall experience.

Lisa:

Good thoughts; if it's a winner, it would be easy to transfer the posts over.

Do:

No, I haven't, but it sounds terrific!

Karen:

Thanks!
