Cover-up, Goof-up, or Elaborate Hoax - The Mysterious "Death" of Dakota Fanning

(Los Angeles, CA) Gonzo gossip and entertainment site Celluloid and Vinyl broke the story of CNN posting news of the death of child actress Dakota Fanning this morning.

The purported CNN story - for which C&V has provided a screenshot of the original article - looks legitimate, although with the wide availability of PhotoShop any image must be considered with a wary eye.

The text of the purported CNN death notice reads as follows:

Mystery shrouds the cause of death for lovable actress Dakota Fanning. At only 12 years old, Dakota had starred in several movies, including last summer;s blockbuster "War of the Worlds." She is survived by her parents Joy and Steve Fanning and sister Elle.

The Internet Wayback Machine, which allows users to access deleted pages, does not have any 2006 entries for CNN.com.

What do you think: coverup of a death, colossal mistake by CNN, or wicked satire by a site seeking fame, fortune, and a house in the hills?

I hope it's not true... I went to my source for Dakota news (http://dakota-fanning.org/) and the site was down because the webmaster is "changing the layout". I wonder if they're preparing a similar devotion week like the cited website, celluloid vinyl.

Our prayers are with the Fannings.

That's not how that site works. You'll have to wait another six or seven months to find any 2006 entries for any site at Archive.org. And even then it'll only go up to Feb 2006. You'll have to wait 'till late 2007 for full 2006 entries. And so on and so forth.

Btw, who the hell is Dakota Fanning?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I was waiting until she grew into Woman hood. Damn you death.

If it is a hoax then it will be a sad day for that girl's family and the photoshopping guy's skills are sick in all senses of the word.

There was a similar CNN hoax a few years ago, but I don't remember the topic of that one. I remember it being much funnier, though.

Oh, wait, that was easy. Tupac's alive!

Hoax. However, I would hardly care if it was true. People need to stop obsessing over these Hollywood idols.

Whew...saw this and then realized it had to be a hoax b/c more people would be talking about it.

*sigh*
Some folks will believe ANY damn THING...

Go to imdb.com (Internet Movie Database) and type in the child's name...it's a HOAX, people!

I'm guessing it's a hoax because that's a doctored screen shot. At least two of those other headlines I recognize from a few days ago, including the one about Eminem and his wife. If you go to CNN now and click on the tab for most popular, at least a couple of those links should appear if they're still in the news after a few days. But none of them do.

No way that's true. CNN.com is my homepage and I was up until 4AM last night writing an essay. I check CNN regularly, just about every hour on the hour that I am near a computer and I didn't see that at all.

People will believe anything!

I have edited Jack's comments and reposted them:

I hope this is a hoax, and if this is the people who made it are ******* horrible. You sick ********! This is a young girl for **** sake. I mean if people want to make a hoax, not over a young girl who is loved by many. It is the exact same if Dakotas parents made things about you mum being raped, torured and ******* stabbed to death! I hate you mother ********. May you rot in hell. ******* i hope satan slowly torture you to death. Wankers!!!!

I can't help but think that Jack's comments (minus the profanity!) were representative of many people who got the news... and got it the way they did. Many (especially children) were probably first sick with grief... then with anger when they began to realize that it might be a hoax. Where were CNN and Cindy Osbrink (Dakota's agent) to tell them so immediately? And where are they now?

if this is true, why did I see pictures of her and her sister Elle on the red carpet at the kids choice awards?
