I think that would depend on what is conspicuously being consumed. I'm not certain that snorting cocaine, for example, could enhance anyone's reputation.

I found it very interesting to read the wikipedia link to Verblen. His theories about the leisure class, consumption and waste seem to be the building blocks of modern advertising!
Again, merci bien, Mike for shedding light on a phrase I have heard most of life "conspicuous consumption" without knowing the real context in which it was concieved!
